Autism Awareness Month

Autism Awareness Month

Did you know that April is Autism Awareness Month?

There’s a saying that if you’ve met one individual with autism, you’ve met one individual with autism. The meaning behind this is that autism is just one word that describes a million characteristics, traits, strengths, challenges, and stories. Since April is Autism Awareness Month, we thought it would be fun to introduce you to someone special in our lives who happens to have autism - our Koa.

Koa is the eldest of our three children. His full name is Kekoa, which means “the brave one” in Hawaiian, and he does his best to live up to his warrior name. He is a glorious mix of simple and complex, a social butterfly and a hermit, a struggler with words yet bluntly honest and direct. Koa graduated from Marana High School two years ago and now works part time at a pizza restaurant. He will be 21 this summer and we can’t believe how fast this milestone birthday has come. On occasion, Koa comes to Filthy Pirate Coffee to help us, so we hope some of you get the chance to meet him! We know our awesome Pirate Crew will welcome him with an open heart.
